We always look forward to talking about towing capacity, but when it comes to the 2022 Dodge Durango, it just feels a little more special. What can we say?

We’re suckers for powerhouse vehicles.

Perhaps we watched too much Home Improvement back in the day?

Make no mistake about it, the 2022 Durango is a powerhouse, even at its base form.

What is this Dragon Ball Z? No, the Durango is not going to go Super Saiyan or anything like that. Then again, when you get it equipped with the most powerful engine option you can, it’ll perform like it just went Super Saiyan.

And while we do want to comment on the power of this beast, the main goal is to discuss the Durango’s towing capabilities (the two sort of go hand-in-hand). So, spill the beans, what’s the 2022 Dodge Durango towing capacity?

What can the different Dodge Durango models tow?

What’s so great about the 2022 Durango is the fact that there are so many different options. Indeed, it comes down to the engine configuration options.

The 2022 Dodge Durango towing capacity ties in directly to that. Depending on the model, you can expect 6.200 to 8.700 pounds of towing capacity.

As alluded to earlier, even with just the standard engine installed, this sucker is going to be able to tow. Let’s further break this down:

The standard 3.6L V6 engine

This right here is the standard engine that you can get for the 2022 Dodge Durango.

If you don’t want to upgrade at all, you can enjoy 293 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque, as well as up to 6.200 pounds of towing capabilities.

At its base, this Durango can easily tow any small travel trailer and even most midsize trailers and motorboats.

The 5.7L HEMI engine

Upgrading a decent amount, the option to buy a 2022 Dodge Durango model that comes with a 5.7L HEMI engine is available to you.

On top of increasing the maximum towing capacity to 7.400 pounds, the more robust, V8 engine also comes with 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft of torque.

However, what’s interesting is for the R/T model, Dodge points out that 8.700 pounds of towing capacity can be achieved with the R/T TOW N GO package installed.

The 6.4L SRT HEMI V8 engine

Whew, now we’re talking about some serious power.

Along with the next engine type, the SRT HEMI V8 maxes out the towing capacity at 8.700 pounds. The horsepower and lb.-ft of torque also get a significant boost of 475 and 470, respectively.

It’ll be able to tow pretty much any mid-sized campers and even small toy haulers.

The Supercharged 6.2L SRT HEMI V8 engine

Okay, if the last engine type was serious power, then we guess you could call this immense power.

While the towing capacity does not see an increase (it remains 8.700 pounds), the power of the engine sees a massive spike.

With 710 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft of torque, let’s just say that this is dubbed a supercharged engine for a reason. Just sheer and utter power right here.

What hitch do you need to use for the Dodge Durango?

As many of you probably know, just because the Dodge Durango towing capacity can be up to 8.700 pounds, it doesn’t mean any old hitch will be able to be installed.

Hitches, in general, are categorized into five different classes with each class serving a different weight range.

Depending on the engine type, you’ll either need a Class III or Class IV hitch.

Class III hitches typically range up to 8.000 pounds (towing capacity). If you opt for the base engine type (or even the 5.7L HEMI), a Class III hitch can get the job done for you.

Upgrading to 8.700 pounds of towing capacity, though, will more than likely require the use of a Class IV hitch (which tends to be able to handle up to 10.000 pounds).

What additional technology is present to help with towing?

Modern vehicles are becoming safer and safer for people to drive. Seeing this ongoing trend of safety, it’s no surprise to see that this vehicle model from Dodge has its fair share of technology features that increase its user safety.

Also seeing that the 2022 Dodge Durango towing capacity is darn impressive, some of these features play a role while you’re towing.

The following features helps the car to always be in full control while on the road:

  • Ready-Alert Braking
  • All-Speed Traction Control
  • Electronic Stability Control

While those can be in effect while towing, the built-in Trailer Sway Control is specifically designed to assist with towing.

To keep the vehicle and trailer stable at all times, this feature will apply brake pressure when needed and will make proper adjustments to the engine throttle.

Do I need to upgrade to a bigger model to be able to tow?

Let’s just say that when viewing the available models, engines, and their respective prices, even we were taken aback a bit at how much the price can spike with the 2022 Dodge Durango.

We suppose it’s the price you pay for the additional power, and, boy, will you have to shell out more money if you want the superior engine types.

As an example, on the official website for Dodge, they have a slew of 2022 Durango builds that you can customize.

The GT (at its starting price) is right around $37.000 and this is the model that comes with the standard 3.6L V6 engine. When you then take a look at the SRT Hellcat (what a name), though, you’ll notice the starting price skyrockets to over $80.000.

The SRT Hellcat comes with the most robust engine type, but the price doubles (and then some) from the GT model.

Now, while that extra price may not seem to be worth an additional 2.500 pounds of towing capacity, the significant boost in engine performance is really the main reason for the massive spike (the Hellcat is dubbed the most powerful SUV ever made).

It’s not as if you have to buy the Hellcat to get 8.700 pounds of towing capacity, though, as other models will reach that maximum Dodge Durango towing capacity value.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for an SUV that can just plain tow, the 2022 Dodge Durango towing capacity is going to satisfy you.

It’s just a beast, plain and simple.

And even if the Hellcat isn’t in your budget, you can still enjoy fantastic towing performance from virtually every alteration of the Dodge Durango.

Speaking of towing capacity, if you had fun with this one, you’ll probably also enjoy looking at the 2022 Chevy Traverse.

It’s all about the power, are we right? It’s all your fault, Tim Taylor!
