The 6.4L SRT HEMI V8 engine
Whew, now we’re talking about some serious power.
Along with the next engine type, the SRT HEMI V8 maxes out the towing capacity at 8.700 pounds. The horsepower and lb.-ft of torque also get a significant boost of 475 and 470, respectively.
It’ll be able to tow pretty much any mid-sized campers and even small toy haulers.
The Supercharged 6.2L SRT HEMI V8 engine
Okay, if the last engine type was serious power, then we guess you could call this immense power.
While the towing capacity does not see an increase (it remains 8.700 pounds), the power of the engine sees a massive spike.
With 710 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft of torque, let’s just say that this is dubbed a supercharged engine for a reason. Just sheer and utter power right here.
What hitch do you need to use for the Dodge Durango?
As many of you probably know, just because the Dodge Durango towing capacity can be up to 8.700 pounds, it doesn’t mean any old hitch will be able to be installed.
Hitches, in general, are categorized into five different classes with each class serving a different weight range.
Depending on the engine type, you’ll either need a Class III or Class IV hitch.

The GT (at its starting price) is right around $37.000 and this is the model that comes with the standard 3.6L V6 engine. When you then take a look at the SRT Hellcat (what a name), though, you’ll notice the starting price skyrockets to over $80.000.
The SRT Hellcat comes with the most robust engine type, but the price doubles (and then some) from the GT model.
Now, while that extra price may not seem to be worth an additional 2.500 pounds of towing capacity, the significant boost in engine performance is really the main reason for the massive spike (the Hellcat is dubbed the most powerful SUV ever made).
It’s not as if you have to buy the Hellcat to get 8.700 pounds of towing capacity, though, as other models will reach that maximum Dodge Durango towing capacity value.
If you’re looking for an SUV that can just plain tow, the 2022 Dodge Durango towing capacity is going to satisfy you.
It’s just a beast, plain and simple.
