It’s one thing to have to shop for a camping chair that you actually end up wanting to sit in, and then it’s another thing entirely when you’re doing so as a bigger guy.
Those cheap, standard camping chairs that you can find at your local stores just don’t tend to get the job done, do they?
No worries, that’s why you’ve stumbled upon this article today.
On top of sharing what we feel is the best camp chair for big guys, we also want to detail several more that are nearly just as good.
So, without further ado, as they say, let’s get this bad boy rolling.
1. Alpha Camp Oversized Camping Chair
Man, this certainly wasn’t an easy choice here. We ultimately decided to go with this as the best camp chair for big guys simply due to the superb combination of its build quality, comfort, features, and solid portability.
Now, we say “solid portability” as big guy chairs are always going to be heavier than the competition. That said, at just over 13 pounds, we’ve seen heavier ones out there. The carrying bag is not the greatest, admittedly, and should’ve been a little bit larger.
As for that build quality, with 600-denier oxford fabric and a powder-coated frame, this sucker’s going to last. It’s still advised to take good care of it as it’s certainly not indestructible, but it’s built very well. Topping this off is additional storage space galore and a level of comfort that most big guys will very much appreciate.
- Heavy-duty and sturdy
- Quite comfortable overall
- Many storage features
- Somewhat narrow
- Not the best carrying bag
- The cupholder’s a bit small
2. LivingXL Heavy-Duty Chair
Now, if you want to talk about a heavy-duty chair, you want to talk about this one from LivingXL. It’d be nice if all big guy camping chairs were made to last, but that’s not the case. This bad boy, though, was indeed made to last with its 600-denier polyester fabric and heavy-duty tubed frame.
It’s not just its durability and build quality that allow it to shine, however, as it has about as many pockets as you could ever want on a camping chair. Then again, when they say this is built for bigger guys, they mean it.
Not only talking about weight but also height. Smaller folks may find this chair a bit awkward as unless you’re close to six feet, your legs will probably end up dangling a little bit. Just something to keep in mind is all. In spite of that, the comfort is admirable.
- Built to last
- About as sturdy as it gets
- Pockets galore
- Not ideal for shorter people
- A bit heavy to carry
- Backrest could be higher
3. Kijaro XXL Camping Chair
When talking about the best camp chair for big guys, it’d be a crime not to mention this entry. No, it didn’t get the top spot, but third place is a highly respectable achievement. If there’s one feature that seems to stand above the rest with it, it’d have to be the comfort.
Let’s face it, even the most comfortable camping chairs get uncomfortable after too long. With incredibly comfortable arms, a breathable mesh back, and a no-sag seat, however, we bet many could sit in this for quite a bit before wanting to get up. Of course, the non-adjustable back is a bit of a disappointment.
This also sports the bells and whistles, such as multiple cup holders and mesh pockets, that you tend to see with these types of camping chairs. Just an overall great buy, even if you’re a smaller guy who just wants the extra room!
- Extremely comfortable arms
- Very sturdy
- Includes cup holders and pockets
- The back is not adjustable
- The box it comes with is huge
- Can be annoying to lock in place
4. Timber Ridge Directors Chair
Yeah, this thing’s a beast. Timber Ridge is a brand that most of you are probably quite familiar with. It always helps when you can put trust in a brand that you already know delivers high-quality products. Speaking for their Directors Chair, it’s durable, comfortable, and practical.
Boy, could you ask anything more out of a camping chair? “Sure, you could ask for the side table it comes with to be a little better.” You know what, that’s fair. Though the side table on this chair is such a good idea, the execution kind of failed a little bit (though it’s still functional).
A fully padded back and seat, powder-coated steel frame, and 600-denier polyester embossed fabric, however, certainly speak to the greatness of this chair. You guessed it, it’s one of our favorites.
- It can hold a lot of weight
- Feels very sturdy
- Well-padded for a camping chair
- The side table is flawed
- Tough to open and fold
- Not the best for shorter people
5. Guide Gear Zero-Gravity Chair
Okay, so while we don’t feel this is the best camp chair for big guys on the market, it’s nice as it’s something a little different. After all, it’s a zero-gravity chair. No, that doesn’t mean that sitting in it means you’ll float up in space. It just provides a unique relaxation position for your body is all.
And at this price range, the quality’s actually really good. Big buy chair staples such as a heavy-duty steel frame and 600-denier polyester fabric are present. Oh, yeah, in addition to the oversized support, this also comes with a padded and adjustable pillow for additional comfort.
It also folds down for storage, though it can be a bit heavy and awkward to do so. The oversized cup holder on the side is sort of the icing on the cake. Got to have that lazy man’s cold drink, right!? We know we do.
- Very comfortable overall
- Excellent quality for the price
- The oversized cup holder rocks
- Not built to endure harsh weather
- Can be awkward to fold
- Locking mechanism is finicky
6. KingCamp Folding Chair
So…there’s kind of a deciding factor to this chair, so to speak. Yes, it’s good, really good. It made this list for a reason. However, some would not say it’s the best camp chair for big guys and would say it’s one of the worst.
Well, how can that be? It comes down to the design of the back. It doesn’t tilt and is designed to be straight. In other words, for those who like to slouch, it might come across as uncomfortable. That said, it’s designed with lumbar support, and it works quite well when used right.
But outside of that, this sucker’s built to take a beating and comes with many different storage options for your goodies. At just over 11 pounds in weight, it’s also worth pointing out, for a big guy chair, it could easily be considered somewhat lightweight.
- Built with many compartments
- Good back support
- Built to last
- No back tilt at all
- The storage bag is too small
- Cuts off circulation to your legs
7. ALPS King Kong Chair
Boy, with a chair that is dubbed the “King Kong Chair,” it better be able to fit the King himself. Alright, we don’t think this could actually sit King Kong…probably. Let’s quit the joking and get down to business, this is rightfully called the King Kong Chair.
If this was just a contest to find the best camp chair for big guys in regard to build, this could’ve won. Pretty much everything was built with quality in mind, from the powder-coated steel frame to the 600-denier polyester fabric to the drink holders and pockets on the side.
It even comes with a good storage bag, and, apparently, that can be rare with this type of thing. However, the comfort, while still pretty good, isn’t the best. It’s not unbearable by any stretch of the imagination, but let’s just say you’re probably not going to set this up in your living room and sit in it all day long.
- Several color options available
- Incredibly built
- Comes with a good storage sack
- Doesn’t breathe well
- The seat can sag
- Not the most comfortable option
8. Timber Ridge Zero-Gravity Chair
It’s kind of crazy because it’s like a tale of two different chairs here with this one and the one we just covered. Talking about this well-designed piece of furniture, it’s probably one of the most comfortable on the market.
Past its zero-gravity design, which already aids in comfort and relaxation, it’s fully padded and comes with a removable pillow that can be used for either head or lumbar support. We dare say this sucker is the best camp chair for big guys regarding sheer comfort.
Then why is it only eighth on the list? It comes down to the build. No, it’s not horrendous at all. There have just been some quality-control problems that many different users have had. Still, it’s not like this is a cheap plastic, dollar-store item that will only last a couple of days.
- About as comfortable as it gets
- Easy to adjust
- It’s very sturdy
- The wooden arms can deteriorate
- Not the best cup holder
- Quality-control issues
9. ALPS Mountaineering Camp Chair
You could say that this has a fairly unique design when compared to the rest that have appeared on this list. One of the standout features is that the back frame is actually detachable. This is an ideal feature to have for a camping chair to keep it as compact as possible.
The drawback to that, however, is that the back needs to be assembled each time you unfold the chair. Not too big of a deal, but something worth pointing out regardless. Also, this comes with an aluminum frame instead of a steel one. Also adding to the portability as this makes it much lighter (it only weighs 10.5 pounds, in fact).
The aluminum frame doesn’t make this some cheap piece of junk, however, as that along with the combination of the 600-denier polyester fabric gives it a really solid and tough build overall. Add in the terrific comfort and you have yourself a top 10 best camp chair for big guys entry.
- Great colors to choose from
- The comfort is really good
- Ideal portability
- Not fit for prolonged exposure
- Has to be assembled each time
- Delicate arm padding
10. Coleman Big-N-Tall Camping Chair
One could argue that this is the most popular option out of this whole list. If on a tighter budget, it also is one of the most affordable. It’s pretty darn good overall, but it’s also not perfect.
We really like the durable and sturdy steel frame, seat draining system that prevents standing water from being an issue, and the oversized nature of the seat itself. However, admittedly, the comfort could be a little better as the front bars can be a bit annoying on your legs.
Additionally, there’s not much versatility when transporting it as it’s designed to be folded and stuffed inside the tote it comes with. Carrying it without the tote is kind of awkward as you can’t really lock it in a folded position. You’d have to use a little DIY magic to get it done.
- A highly durable product
- Quite comfortable overall
- Nice storage compartments
- Front bars can cause discomfort
- “Big-N-Tall” are directly on case
- Limited portability options
Frequently asked questions
How do you clean mold off of a camping chair?
Most of us have been there. We go to get out our camping chairs, and we notice they have mold on them. Gross! Even the best camp chair for big guys on this list can succumb to mold. Question is, how do you clean it off?
Either using oxygen bleach or liquid detergent, scrub the affected area thoroughly with a soft-bristled brush for around 15 minutes. Get some elbow grease in there. Afterward, rinse it off with hot water and allow the chair to air dry. It’s also not a bad idea to see what the manufacturer recommends so you could always reach out to them directly.
How do you store camping chairs?
Outside of using the storage bags and such that come with the chairs (if that happens to be the case), there are many different storage options at your disposal. As a matter of fact, you can really get creative with it. We recommend, no matter what you do, keeping your chairs in a location that’s cool and dry.
We just talked about mold, and the best way to avoid mold is to avoid moisture from building up. After all, the stuff isn’t going to grow without moisture. But, other than that, you can use totes, bags, or just stand them up as they are anywhere you please.
We hope all you big guys out there, or anyone who’s just happening to shop for the best camp chair for big guys, were able to get some good use out of this article.
That’s our main goal, after all, as it doesn’t do us much good to just sit here and type for no reason. All the best in your search and, as always, happy camping! 🙂
